LET ME LOVE YOU FOR TONIGHT KARIYA

To know me is to know that I'm a freestyle fan.  Well Let me love you For Tonight a Sleeping Bag release from 1988 is not your typical freestyle jam.

It sort of bridges the gap between house and freestyle with a little hip hop sensibility thrown in for extra measure.  Here I've included the 1989 U.K. mixes for you. I don't really know anything about Kariya so this is going to be a brief blog.  KARIYA ZIP

The track made it to #15 on the Billboard Dance Charts and was her only charted hit.

It was included on the soundtrack to the movie Rise of the FootSoldier.

BUT I JUST WANT TO BE FREE a Deniece Williams classic

Whispering in his ear
my magic potion for love
telling him I'm sincere
and that there's
nothing too good for us
and I just got to be free

Whispering in his ear
my magic potion for love
telling him I'm sincere
and that there's
nothing too good for us
but I want to be free
free free
and I just to be me
me me
Teasing hands on his mind
gives life such mystery
happiness all the time
oh and how that just pleases me
but I want to be free
free free
and I just got to be me
me

Feeling you close to me
makes all my senses smile
lets not waste ecstasy
because I'll only be here for a while
I got to be free
free free
and I just got to be me
me me
Free Free
and I just wannna
I just wanna be me
FREE
FREE
This song gives me goosebumps. In DJ circles it's what's called SLEAZE or MORNING MUSIC. Deniece went on to a fair amount of commercial success but I will always remember her for this 1976 power ballad.  I'VE GOT THE NEXT DANCE MAXI SINGLE IN MY EBAY STORE

A FEW BY CHERI including MURPHY'S LAW from 1982

Cheri were composed of Rosalind Hunt and Amy Roslyn.  Rosalind was of course Geraldine Hunt's daughter who had the #1 disco smash Can't Fake the Feeling.  Rosalind's brother Freddie James also had some disco hits including the massive Get up and Boogie.  CAN'T FAKE THE FEELING if you're not feeling what I'm feeling...

Even though Cheri only had two albums they did rack up a few huge disco hits including Give it to me Baby, Star Struck and their biggest hit 1982's Murphy's Law which had that unforgettable chorus that sounded like it was sung by a robotic chipmunk.  MURPHY'S LAW
THE GALS WERE FROM MONTREAL AND GIVE IT TO ME BABY IS SUNG PARTIALLY IN FRENCH  STAR STRUCK
My friend Greg Womack did a fabulous edit of Give it to me Baby a couple years ago so I figured I'd round out the post with this gem too.  THE WOMACK REWORK

I hate to tell you, but I got a bit of bad news
I don't love you no more
I see life is like a circle
Everything you do comes back to you
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
You know the car, you missed the last payment
The finance company came and towed it away, towed it away
And the money that you owe to your best friend
You don't owe him no more
'Cause the ring that you bought me for my birthday
I cashed it in at the store
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
You know the girl that you've been foolin' around with
She got married today
What happened to your brand new house
Someone took it away
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
(Hey, what is Murphy's Law)
(I dunno)
Murphy's Law
(I think, well, lemme see)
(I think whatever could go wrong will go wrong)
(That means we're in big trouble)
(Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)
Murphy's Law, sure out to get you
(Got it all together, don't you, baby)

Songs of Texas The Reptiles

This 1992 British alternative rock song has become a morning music classic over the years.  But then again is anyone playing morning music anymore?  In the club in my fantasies they are.

B.T. Express 2 Hot Ones from 1980

B.T. Express was formed in Brooklyn in 1972.  They were first known as King Davis House Rockers but made a smart choice with the name change suggested by Mel Cheron.  The B and T actually stand for Brooklyn Transit and why not?  Their sound came to be known as the Brooklyn sound.
They remained active for 15 years and were right in the middle of things during the proto disco period.  Luckily they were finally signed to Scepter where Mel Cheron championed the disco sound which led to back to back #1 hits on the r&b charts with Express and Do it (til you're satisfied), their own brand of funky disco was THE SOUND OF 1975.  Though they continued to release quality material yearly, none of it ever really reached their early peak.
1980 would have been a very promising year for them.  But it also came to be known as the year disco fell out favor.  So even though they released some amazing tracks like Give up the Funk (let's dance) and Does it Feel Good it didn't translate into much chart success.  The promo twelve inch of both of those songs have become quite collectible.  I'm providing them for you here. B.T. Zip

The mighty Billy Nichols did come up with a solo track that was a favorite at The Paradise Garage with Give Your Body up to the Music on West End Records.

B-side Cairo Nights, Fab 5 Freddy, Fab 5 Betty, Celluloid Electro Hotness

Debbie Harry protege' Fab 5 Freddy was active on the New York Hip Hop Scene in the same period that Blondie was blowing up.  In 1981 they in fact recorded a Christmas song together called Yuletide Throwdown which is majorly collectible and was released on green flexivinyl.  Furthermore he gets a shout-out on the rap in Rapture.  Which might be the only way people not on the underground scene would have ever heard of him.

Meanwhile Fab 5 Betty also known as Ann Boyle Is featured on the project B-side and in the seminal Electro/Punk combo platter called Time Zone along with Afrika Baaambata and Johnny Lydon of The Sex Pistols.

So just like a lot of current rap music is meshing with EDM there was a lot of mixing of hip hop and electro and disco back in the day.  But back then it wasn't as blatantly commercial as it is now.  Good
Times by Chic was of course the music behind the first huge rap song on the pop charts, Rapper's Delight in 1979.

It became the definitive roller disco song.

Produced by Material and featuring the vocals of Bernard Fowler and a cast of others B side was one of many collaborative releases on the seminal Celluloid label out of New York.

The sound still holds up today.  Check out the songs A lot to Give and Paris-Taxi they are probably my favorites.   TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK
